Jacquelyn Smiertka, R.N., has dedicated the past 25 years to the field of obesity surgery. She has worked with Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Duodenal Switch patients. She has given presentations regarding the necessity of education for weight loss surgery patients nationally and internationally in Austria, Greece, Italy, and Spain. In 1999, she began the publication, Beyond Change, for the purpose of educating bariatric patients, particularly those who were unable to attend support group meetings. She is a coauthor of, “Caring for the Surgical Weight Loss Patient” and facilitates biweekly support group meetings. Her aim is to enhance the education of all who have had or are planning to have bariatric surgery.
